State High School Marching Band Competition

24 October 2010 – 9:49pm Yesterday we went to the Colorado Bandmaster’s Association State 4A/5A High School Marching Band Finals held at Falcon Stadium at the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs. First I have to say how amazing each and every band performed! I’m very impressed by the level of performance shown by all of these kids. I think that are far above where I remember my high school band, and possibly college bands at the time as well. I was planning to take pictures of Arapahoe’s band and color guard during the semi-finals, since it was during the afternoon when there would be plenty of natural light. We got a phone call from one of the color guard parents asking for help moving the large props that are used during the performance, as not all of the volunteers that they had arranged for had been able to make it. We were happy to help out, but it was a lot of work to wheel them down the hill from the parking lot, and into the tunnel leading to the field. It turned out that the tunnel wasn’t quite as tall as they expected, and the candy cane tubes were slightly taller than they thought, so they were a few inches too tall! We tipped a couple of the at an angle to get them through, but decided that was taking too much time. We discovered that removing one of the tie-down straps that attaches the tube to the base allowed the top […]

Y2K10 Bug

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve noticed that I had started to catch good email in my Mac OS X Server’s email spam filter. It was odd, since it generally works quite well, and rarely catches any “false positives.” This morning at my office, one of the guys I work with was having to patch one of our systems because of a “Y2K10 bug” where the date isn’t interpreted correctly. Later, I noticed on Slashdot there was a story about the Y2K10 bug affecting a large number of systems around the world. I did a quick search for Spamassassin, and found that it was suffering from a bug in a date rule! Apple has a technical note on the issue: Mac OS X Server v10.5 and 10.6 use SpamAssassin to filter “spam” from inbound messages; SpamAssassin includes a rule that increases the spam score for any inbound message sent on or after January 1, 2010. This increased score may cause some inbound messages sent on or after January 1, 2010 to be inadvertently filtered as spam. There is an updated spamassassin rule that fixes the problem as well. Run the command: sudo sa-update –nogpg to apply the new rule. The –nogpg flag is needed for OS X Server since it doesn’t have GPG installed by default.

In Memory of Charles Junior Gaede 1920 – 2009

My father-in-law, Charles Junior Gaede, passed away on 24 February 2009 at age 89. He was born in Richmond, Indiana on 11 February 1920 to Ruth Vera (Gehring) and Charles Louis Gaede. In 1936 he quit high school and performed odd jobs. He also painted houses for his father for $35 per week. From 1939 to 1941 he worked in a camera shop in Richmond, Indiana. This was an important position for Charles, as it became his goal to own his own camera shop.

Coppélia

Melissa will be performing in the Colorado Ballet production of Coppélia at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Center for Performing Arts. We start with “once upon a time” and end with “wow!” A children’s tale, perhaps. But this is really a magical event for everyone with an imagination and a funny bone. This classic ballet is filled with magic and mayhem. Start with one eccentric toy-maker, throw in a plan to bring a mechanical doll to life, and mix well with a red-blooded young lover, a jealous fiancé and an array of mischievous maidens. You end up with a wild mix of abracadabra, spooky adventure and plenty of old-fashioned love. Don’t miss this enchanting tale and playful choreography! Click here for the Coppélia Study Guide.
